豊国三代は初代豊国の門人で、はじめ国貞と名乗り、天保15年に豊国二代を名乗った。しかし、すでに豊重が豊国二代を襲名しており、国貞が二代を名乗ったのは自分こそが後継者だという意識によるともいわれている。現在では両者を区別するため、「豊国三代」として扱われる。
作画期が長く、作品数は一万点以上に及ぶと考えられている。特に役者絵・美人画等の人物の描写に定評があり、圧倒的な作品数と人気から、江戸浮世絵界を風靡していたことがうかがえる。

Toyokuni III was a pupil of Toyokuni I. He initially worked under the name Kunisada and, in 1844, adopted the name Toyokuni II. Although Toyoshige had already succeeded Toyokuni II, Kunisada also assumed the title and is now conventionally known as Toyokuni III to distinguish him from Toyoshige.
With a career spanning several decades, Toyokuni III is believed to have produced more than 10,000 works. He was especially acclaimed for his depictions of figures, particularly actor prints and bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women). The remarkable number of his works and their widespread popularity suggest the tremendous impact he had on the ukiyo-e world of late Edo Japan.
