This series models popular Oiran of the Edo period after the 36 masters described in Fujiwara no Kintō's Thirty-Six Immortal Poets from the Heian period.

Toyokuni III was a student of Toyokuni. He initially used the name Kunisada, and in 1844, he adopted the name Toyokuni II. (In reality, Toyoshige had already succeeded as Toyokuni II, but Kunisada also took the name at that time, perhaps to solidify his own position. To avoid confusion, Kunisada is now recognized as Toyokuni III.)
Toyokuni III had a long and prolific career, with some sources estimating that he produced over 10,000 works. He was best known for his portrayals of people, particularly actor portraits and bijin-ga (images of beautiful women). The sheer volume of his works and their widespread popularity suggest that he dominated the Edo ukiyo-e world.
