群衆の中心で、素人力士たちが取組をおこなっている。暗闇の敷地内に構えられた簡易な土俵だけが光を放ち、そのまわりに浮かび上がった人々の顔が何とも印象的だ。素人角力は当時老若男女問わず人気の行事で、祭りの余興などによく組み込まれたという。

石渡江逸は巴水の門人の一人で、関東の各地を自ら歩き回ってスケッチを行い、見逃してしまいそうなほどに極めて日常的な光景を版画化していった。他に庄一郎、芳美の号を持つ。光と影の表現を巧みに表現し、昭和期の風景を見事にとらえている。

In the center of the crowd, amateur sumo wrestlers are competing. Only a simple sumo ring set up in the darkness of the grounds is illuminated, and the faces of the people around it are impressive. Amateur sumo wrestlers were popular with men and women of all ages at the time and were often included as entertainment at festivals.

ISHIWATA Koitsu was one of the pupils of KAWASE Hasui. He had walked around the Kanto region and sketched the extremely common scenes in everyday life that are easily overlooked, and he created print works from it.
He skillfully expressed light and shadow and captured the scenery of the Showa period.
