SHINODA Toko was born in Dalian, China, in 1913. The first time she met the ink and the brush was when she was 5 years old. After that, she started self-taught calligraphy. After the pacific war, she began to take the word apart and to draw abstract artworks. She moved her base in New York in 1956 and held several solo exhibitions. After she returned in 1958, she began to create wall paintings, wall calligraphies, and reliefs connected to the architectural works. She also created the masterpieces for fusumas at Zojo-Ji temple, book designs, writings...Her works include many things.
The wild touch in the '50s became including lyricism, and her lines and the unique spaces and the compositions were furthermore polished in the '80s and '90s.
