Osumi had been placed in the current Kagoshima prefecture. The mountain in the middle of this artwork is Sakura-Jima Ontake.
In the time that Hiroshige created this artwork, Sakura-jima had been an island, however, this landscape changed caused by the eruptions in 1914. Sakura-Jima is currently connected to the Osumi peninsula.
This volcano erupts at regular intervals, however, it gives the land the soil of rich vegetation, and also there are a lot of hot springs and beautiful landscapes.
"Famous Places in the 60-Odd Provinces" is a series by Hiroshige depicting famous places throughout Japan.
All of the works are vertically oriented, with innovative compositions such as a large foreground and emphasis on perspective.
