Shuzenji Temple is a Soto Zen temple.
It is said that Kobo-Daishi, moved by the sight of a boy washing his sick father's body in the river's cold water, broke a rock with a Buddhist implement called a tokko and brought the hot water of Shuzen-ji to a boil.
A stone pillar shaped like a tokko can be seen in the hot water in the center of the river. This stone pillar was recently found buried in the river.
"Famous Places in the 60-Odd Provinces" is a series by Hiroshige depicting famous places throughout Japan.
All of the works are vertically oriented, with innovative compositions such as a large foreground and emphasis on perspective.
