芳年による晩年の代表的揃物「月百姿」の一図である。源氏物語の夕顔を題材とし、光源氏と儚い恋の末に命を落とした夕顔の霊を描いている。儚げにたたずむ夕顔の佇まいと、その傍らに咲く夕顔の花、薄明かりに浮かび上がるような静寂な世界観が、芳年ならではの繊細な線描と幻想的な構成によって表現されている。
