国芳は豊国の門人で、当初は兄弟子の国貞等の人気に勝てずしばらくは不遇の日々を過ごしたが、文政頃に発表した「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人」の連作が評判となり、「武者絵の国芳」と称され人気絵師の仲間入りを果たす。その後は画想の豊かさ、斬新なデザイン力、奇想天外なアイデア、確実なデッサン力を持ち、浮世絵の枠にとどまらない広範な魅力を持つ作品を多数生み出した。

Kuniyoshi was a pupil of Toyokuni. In his early career, he struggled to match the popularity of senior pupils such as Kunisada. Still, around the Bunsei era (1818–1830), his series One Hundred and Eight Heroes of the Popular Suikoden proved to be his breakthrough, catapulting him to fame. Thereafter, he became known as the leading master of warrior prints.
Renowned for his boundless imagination, innovative designs, and exceptional draftsmanship, Kuniyoshi produced a remarkable body of work that extended far beyond the conventional boundaries of ukiyo-e.
