篠田桃紅は、1913 年に中国・大連に生まれる。5 歳の時に墨と筆に触れ、以後独学で書を極める。第二次世界大戦後は文字を解体し、墨で抽象を描き始める。1956 年渡米し、ニューヨークを拠点に各地で個展を開催。58 年に帰国してからは、壁画や壁書、レリーフといった建築に関わる仕事や、増上寺大本堂の襖絵などの大作の一方で、リトグラフや装丁、題字、随筆を手掛けるなど、活動は多岐にわたった。
50 年代の激しい筆致はやがて叙情性をたたえ、80 年代から 90 年代にかけては、線はより洗練された間を構成していった。近年、面と線は寄り添い、朱はあくまで高貴に、墨は静かに鋭く、あるいは控えめに層をなしている。2005 年、ニューズウィーク(日本版)の「世界が尊敬する日本人 100 人」に選ばれるなど、その筆勢は留まることがない。

SHINODA Toko was born in Dalian, China, in 1913. The first time she met the ink and the brush was when she was 5 years old. After that, she started self-taught calligraphy. After the pacific war, she began to take the word apart and to draw abstract artworks. She moved her base in New York in 1956 and held several solo exhibitions. After she returned in 1958, she began to create wall paintings, wall calligraphies, and reliefs connected to the architectural works. She also created the masterpieces for fusumas at Zojo-Ji temple, book designs, writings...Her works include many things.
The wild touch in the '50s became including lyricism, and her lines and the unique spaces and the compositions were furthermore polished in the '80s and '90s.
