セレベスという名は植民地時代に使用された名称であり、深水がこの作品を制作した当時はまだ植民地時代であったことが分かる。この作品では海や川と密接に暮らすインドネシアらしい高床式の住居が描かれ、現地の生活がのどかな空気とともに丁寧にスケッチされている。
