Yotsuya Okido was once an entrance to the Koshu Kaido road. During the Edo period, it formed part of Naito-Shinjuku, an area lined with inns and shops. Shotei captures the traces of old Tokyo in a quiet scene, depicting the streets and everyday life of its people within the slender format. The print conveys the calm atmosphere of an older Tokyo landscape that remained as the city underwent modernization.
