石見有福温泉は、関東大震災で被災した巴水が再起をかけて旅を始めた時期の傑作である
島根県の山間にある古名湯・有福温泉を描いたもので、右手から斜め下へと見下ろす独特な石段の構図が、すり鉢状の温泉街の臨場感を巧みに伝えている。夕暮れ時の深く青い影と、家々から漏れる温かい灯火のコントラストが美しく情緒が見事に表現されている。

Detail: Discrepancy in the title
Hodo Sennin, a sage trusted by Emperor Kotoku during the Asuka period, discovered Arifuku hot springs while traveling across the country. The area subsequently developed into a post town as the road network was improved during the Edo period; later, in the Meiji era, it served as a hot spring resort for treating wounded soldiers and providing them with recreation, eventually flourishing as a glamorous entertainment district where geisha gathered.
KAWASE Hasui was initially active as a Japanese painter but switched to printmaking artist by being impressed by ITO Shinsui's woodblock artwork "Eight Views of Omi," published in 1918.
After that, he became active as a leading artist in the Shinhanga field and left behind many print works in his 40 years of painting, numbering over 600.
Hasui's characteristic blue color is called "Hasui Blue" because it has a deep impression that even includes the atmosphere of the sketched places.
