One of the 26 prints in the "Selected Views of the Tōkaidō" series, it depicts a winter scene featuring the castle town and the edge of the moat at Hikone Castle in Shiga Prefecture. The leftover snow, the long-standing elder tree, a parent and child making way- these elements capture the particularly crisp and clean atmosphere of the bitingly cold early springtime.
KAWASE Hasui was initially active as a Japanese painter but switched to printmaking after being impressed by ITO Shinsui's woodblock artwork "Eight Views of Omi," published in 1918.
After that, he became active as a leading artist in the Shinhanga movement and left behind many print works over his 40 years of painting, numbering more than 600.
Hasui's characteristic blue color is called "Hasui Blue" because it has a deep impression that even includes the atmosphere of the sketched places.
