後の「越後の龍」こと上杉謙信の幼少期（幼名：長尾景虎）にまつわる英傑伝説を描いた一図である。越後の米山（よねやま）に登った幼き日の景虎が、眼下に広がる山河を見渡し、将来この地を拠点として父の仇を討ち天下に立ち立つ誓いを語ったという逸話が題材となっている。幼少でありながら堂々とした面持ちで遥か遠方を見据え、指し示す姿には、後に越後を統一し戦国の世に義を貫いた大武将の片鱗が強く漂っている。

明治期の人々に自己研鑽と高潔な志を説いた名作シリーズ「教導立志基」の精神を体現する作品である。幼少期から抱いていた揺るぎない覚悟と未来を切り開く強い意志をテーマとし、清親ならではの巧みな明暗表現と写実的な人物像によって、武将の志の原点が重厚な情緒とともに表現された名品である。

This print depicts a legendary childhood anecdote of Uesugi Kagetora (later Uesugi Kenshin, the celebrated warlord known as the "Dragon of Echigo"). Standing atop Mount Yoneyama in Echigo, the young Kagetora gazes over the sweeping landscape and vows to use this land as a stronghold to avenge his father and forge his own destiny. Despite his youth, his dignified posture and resolute gaze pointing into the distance vividly presage the formidable warlord who would later unify Echigo and uphold righteousness throughout the Sengoku period.
