This print illustrates a famous legend surrounding the extraordinary insight of Ono Tofu, one of the three master calligraphers ("Sanseki") of the Heian period. Observing the plaque for the Daigokuden hall written by Kukai during the reign of Emperor Saga, Tofu noted that the character for "big" (大) subtly resembled the character for "fire" (火), predicting that the hall might eventually succumb to flames. As legend has it, the palace was indeed later destroyed by fire, cementing Tofu's reputation for incomparable perception and foresight.
This work comes from the celebrated series Instructive Models of Lofty Ambition, designed in the Meiji period to inspire personal growth and moral determination. By highlighting Tofu's profound observation and foresight rather than just his brushwork, the print conveys the importance of honing one's intellect and innate talents. Kiyochika's refined depiction of character and subtle atmosphere endows this historical episode with timeless elegance and emotional depth.
