This extraordinary print depicts a leopard exhibited at the West Ryogoku plaza—Edo's bustling entertainment district—in 1860 during the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate. As Japan opened its borders, exotic animals brought from overseas sparked immense curiosity and sensation among the public, drawing crowds to spectacle tents daily. This design captures the leopard's supple body, vivid spots, and piercing gaze, dynamically reflecting the Edo populace's fascination and astonishment toward unknown creatures from abroad.
At the time, leopards and tigers were often confused by the Japanese public, and prints celebrating these exotic spectacles were eagerly published to meet the intense popular demand. Created by Yoshitoyo, a pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi known for his dynamic compositions, this work showcases his sharp observational skills and stands as a fascinating historical record of late-Edo popular culture and foreign encounters.
