四代目中村芝翫が日本左衛門に扮し、刀を口にくわえて波間を飛び越えるような姿を描いた一枚。大きく身を反らし、両腕を広げた大胆な姿勢と、画面下部に激しくうねる波が、盗賊の豪快な動きを際立たせている。藍を基調とした衣装に鮮やかな色彩を加え、躍動感あふれる人物像に仕上げている。実在の盗賊・日本左衛門を題材とした講釈や実録の世界を背景に、豊国が芝翫の姿を通して勇壮な人物像を描き出した作品である。
