本作のテーマである「茶の湯（茶道）」は、明治時代に入ると、それまでの特権階級の嗜みから、良家の子女が身につけるべき「花嫁修業」や「教養」へとその役割が変化していった。春汀は、まさにそうした時代の空気をまとった、モダンで美しい女性たちの茶会のワンシーンを巧みに切り取っている。

In 1890, Shuntei moved to Tokyo with aspirations of becoming an artist and studied painting under Tomioka Eisen.
Having mastered ukiyo-e figure painting, Shuntei became especially known for his gentle portrayals of children and beautiful women, while also producing numerous illustrations for magazines and newspapers.
