This piece depicts the legend of Empress Jingu's conquest of Korea. It portrays the fierce battle between starving tigers, spanning across three sheets. Since tigers are not living in Japan, the depiction may resemble a cat at times.
Yoshitora was a disciple of Kuniyoshi and one of the prominent artists active from the late Edo period to the early Meiji period. His most notable works were in the genre of Yokohama-e and Kaika-e, depicting the novel customs emerging around the time of the Meiji Restoration.
