Hosai was a student of Toyokuni III and called himself Kunisada IV. After the death of Toyokuni III, he studied under Kunisada II. After the death of Toyokuni III, he studied under Kunisada II and succeeded Kunisada's name as the third generation in 1889 and changed his name to Kochoro. After 1894, he changed his name to Hosai. He mainly painted Kaika-e and yakusha-e, specializing in portraits of Ichikawa Sadanji I. He also painted many genre paintings.
